S2Nome : Regarding F2P and EAP

  An S2 designer's viewpoint on F2P/EAP
We are our harshest critics

First things first; as you already likely know, I am employed by S2 Games, and therefore you should come into this topic with tempered expectations. However, if I may, I will ask you to, for the purposes of this thread, take me primarily not as a mouthpiece for my company, but first and foremost a fervent fan of Heroes of Newerth.

When the Early Access Program (EAP) was first announced to the designers several months ago, I was initially apprehensive to the thought. As I sat in Maliken's office along with everyone else, there were a lot of thoughts racing through my mind. I wondered why we were doing this, how the playerbase would respond, and I felt conflicted because I knew that we would effectively be reneging on the avowal of shunning pay-for-power, something every single employee of S2 Games prided ourselves in doing.

But here's the reality:

We do not have investors like our competition. The bulk of us are located in a small, middle-of-nowhere town lodged between Chicago and Detroit. Our workplace is in the husk of a former real estate office. We embody the humble indie studio. Yet we are all fiercely loyal to the company, and in stark contrast to the profit-centered, publicly-traded gaming behemoths that dominate the employment climate, almost all of our employees are salaried workers, not contract or hourly. Before we relocated from California, I personally commuted 3 hours each day to get to work, paying $30 in bridge tolls and $60 in gas a week. Yet each night, I could barely keep myself from thinking about going back to work the next morning, and I knew it wasn't just me feeling that way, or just me making such a journey just to arrive at work on a daily basis. One of our programmers, Deejay, recently said that applying for S2 was one of the best choices he's made in his entire life, a sentiment a lot of us can attest to. Spirits are always high, and we're always looking not just forward, but higher--that's something that is unfortunately becoming more and more of a luxury among the game development community, and it's something we're all proud of here. We're an indie studio, but we have heart.
To contrast, HoN is not a cheap game to develop. To pay our nearly 50 employees, to continue providing working servers, to keep pushing out content at a steady rate is not a cheap endeavor--in fact, it incurs costs higher than most MMOs. What is most important to understand here, and what changed my opinion on the subject, is that the F2P conversion and addition of EAP serve the ultimately purpose of improving HoN. As a designer, this is what struck a chord with me, and why I eventually gave my seal of approval and continued commitment. As I mentioned before, we are not a publicly traded company. Our primary motivation is not to turn profits to please shareholders; it's to create and maintain a top-of-the-line product. My boss is Marc DeForest, AKA Maliken; he's about 30 seconds away, down the hall and to the left. I can talk to him to bring up troubles. We eat lunch together once in a while. He's invited me, and other employees, over to his house on multiple occasions. He is a real, living, breathing human being, not a nebulous overlord across the ocean that I'l never meet, who has no personal connection to me or my job, and communicates via directives down a corporate stepladder of bosses. And that's what changed me into a believer--knowing that no matter how vested any of our players may be, the most passionate fans will always be ourselves.
Because we are the ultimate critics of ourselves, trust that we are doing what we believe will benefit our community and game the most.
To our loyal players and fans, thank you for your staunch support. To those who are joining us, you have a wonderful journey to begin. This is not the end, but a beginning, and I humbly believe that you too will see that the fruits of this initiative will far outweigh the negatives!

just stfu Nome and take that early acces thing away, then your company might survive DotA 2.

I think that the only problem is the early access system.
i have looked at a f2p acc, and saw that the prices for heroes are really payable.
So in my opinion the only problem the howl community is screaming about is the early access.
The problem is that this people who think this is a problem are legendary players who played for the game. So S2 got money by them.

Remove EARLY ACCESS from Paid accounts.

This was supposed to be my fav game in the Dota genre - now I just can't wait to ACCESS ALL HEROES in Dota 2.

To be honest, the minor problem is the +1 hero or not, the mayor is the need for a legacy only mode, if you meet 15 hero pooled player as verified who doesn't want to spend token or what ever, that will cripple balance immensely.

17 days to the real competitor. Then you probably will be able to say goodbye to all of your "game design" dreams

I think you are doing a great job, the change to f2p will for sure make the hon playerbase alot larger. Can't really understand the kids that sit here and complain about EA. The heroes WILL be released to all legacy users if you wait long enough, but if you really, really want to play him before that you have the option to buy them for gold.. There's no one forcing you to buy them, it's an option.

Thank you for a good game S2! :)

You should remove the early access cuz you'l screw up teh game and you promised 2 heroes on this friday and we only got frunken master and monkey king on early access whic we can't play if we don't have gold coins.

Come on all, wtf!
Early access is nothing! It's a good thing in my oppinion!

the main prob is the f***** up servers and the stats just fix them and all will calm down!!!!

The REAL problem is, why everyone is so angry, that S2 presented us the new heroes, and never mentioning ANYTHING about the early access, they made us want to play the new hero (monkey king) so much, and then what happens ? we have to buy it.
that's the true reason why all hate the early access.

And another point is, that we have to spend gold coins on it, if they allow silver coins too,
it would be also a less problem..

what they did was kinda rude and shameless..

so my opinion..
make him available for 500 silver coins too.
then it would be more fair..

I am a new player and thank you for the welcome. I had no idea your studio was so small and I am impressed that the game is as high quality as it is.

Well, lets just start to cool our heads off from this heat, i know that this early access thing is really ridiculous. But if we think about it more, its not a big thing, and our main weapon is "Cant wait for DOTA2" or "DOTA2 will be the answer".
I wont deny that DOTA2 will be good, but im pretty sure that HON will survive from it.But FYI, i will play both of them

lol if you are stupid enough to think dota 2 wont have kind of the same paying system that hon and lol have.

you think the guys at valve are doing charity?

if you think you have been ripped of after som much time of playing you are really short sighted.

Scenario analysis by a "pro", so mark the words:

As I wrote earlier +1 hero doesn't change that much in the balance of force, it converges to 0. (legacy vs. legacy) What makes HoN imba now, is that there is no protection vs the basic/verified imbalanced players with 15 hero pool, and that's not +/- 1 hero, that is -60. (at current model) And S2 can't afford to make moves towards to protect legacy players anymore, why is explained further down.

Games below 1700 will be surely converge to LoL style/type of game...pretty much stomp/unenjoyable/no communication/0 team play and even LoL players complain how this sucks compared to LoL (atm of time). Good luck getting above 1700 or better 1800 and stay there. This will ultimately be the course that old players who want "the good old hon" way of playing to quite if Dota2 implements these elements correctly. (according to betatesters from MYM, yes it will definitely have the feeling of HoN+DotA combined)

Overtime, this will leave HoN/LoL behind, so it will be a battle between them and at the moment LoL is ahead in F2P market by a huge margin, so that why HoN can't afford to loose more ground towards benefiting old players (that why is useless to ask for Legacy only mod for example, because that will be not looking beneficial towards the new players)...so S2 will only make improvement towards NEW player base to stay a bit longer in the "game", so they try their best, but the faith of HoN will be decided in this battle (vs LoL) now and not Dota2.

Dota2 will have propably not a pure F2P, rather something mixed, like BLC has or who knows. Valve is a different "size" of company.

WOULD I PAY 5$ EACH MONTH FOR A NEW SKIN?
NO
WOULD I PAY 5$ EACH MONTH FOR EARLY ACCESS?
NO
WOULD I PAY 5$ _EACH WEEK_ FOR A NEW HERO?
___YES___

You could win the war of quality
You decided to lose in a competition for the worse against LoL.

You should also count more on your 90% active fanbase.

Lol. For those that say dota2...
You get a game in which the meta is to free farm...all day...Sandwraith is broken...perma-stun heroes...Blood seeker sucks bawls... And basically every hero buff..

No Deadwood, no chipper, no Gauntlet.

No thanks.

What is wrong with all the assholes posting in the comments? S2, you've done great work and I appreciate your honesty to get in touch with us. I think F2P was the last (and a good) option left. If Early Access helps sustain a game I've been playing almost daily for 2 years, then I'm all for it. Thanks again

$2 sucks ass for lying, and f*** the loyal customers in the ass, I paid over 200$ cash on cosmetics because it was a good ide which was presented to the community a week or two before it was implemented, nowthey chose to be sack of **** and act like it's nothing big.
Well DOTA 2 will fix it, yes there will be extra cost for customizations and stuff which I will gladlyget but not this crap.

as for the competitive prob a lot of you are addressing aren't early access heroes banned from tournament use until they are fully released so there if you are worried about your own normal mmr matches just learn how to deal with the champ and be patient for it's release
